What:  Pruning workshop in Northern Virginia
When:  1 pm – 4pm, 4 February 2013
Where: AHS Jr. AREC, near Winchester VA - http://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/alson-h-smith/contact/index.html
Details:   Join us for an informative session which will cover: pruning basics, vine balance, gathering pruning weights and guided pruning practice.  This meeting will have examples of VSP, pruning vines of different size, head training cane pruning vs. cordon training spur pruning, and training one year old vines.  Workshop will be outside rain or shine, bring a pair of pruning shears and appropriate weather gear.  Meet inside the building in the large conference room.  No fee or RSVP is required for this workshop.

Details:  Join us for an informative session which will all cover: pruning basics, vine balance, gathering pruning weights and guided pruning practice.  This meeting will have examples of VSP, ballerina & high wire training systems, head training cane pruning vs. cordon training spur pruning, and training 2 year old vines.  Workshop will be outside rain or shine, bring a pair of pruning shears.  We will have a Spanish translator at this workshop – please encourage Spanish speakers to attend.  Meet in the paved lot outside of the conservatory.  No fee or RSVP is required for this workshop.

What:  Integrated Pest Management (IPM) workshop in Northern Virginia
When:  9:30 – 4 pm, 21 March 2013
Details:  This workshop will review pertinent information about disease, pest and weed biology and control strategies with a focus on Integrated Pest Management.  We will review a mock spray schedule to help growers plan for the upcoming growing season.   Viticulture, Grape Pathology, Entomology and Weed Specialists will be present.  Please bring a bagged lunch.  Please RSVP via the following link:  https://survey.vt.edu/survey/entry.jsp?id=1357766257153

What:  Beginner’s Grape Growing Seminar
When:  9:00 am until approximately 5:00 pm, 11 April 2013

Details: Dr. Tony Wolf (VA Tech), Dr. Mizuho Nita (VA Tech), and Tremain Hatch (VA Tech) will conduct a workshop geared towards beginner and prospective wine grape growers at the AHS Jr. AREC near Winchester.  Registration is $50 per person (checks made payable to “Virginia Tech Foundation” and mailed to: Tremain Hatch, VA Tech, 595 Laurel Grove Rd., Winchester VA 22602). Registration must be received by 8 April.  Course offers an overview of commercial wine grape vineyard development including economics, grape marketing, equipment needs, site evaluation and preparation, planting, and young vine care. The information gained from this workshop will provide a foundation upon which you can build your vineyard project. Season's Greetings!

I hope you and your family have a good holiday season and a Happy (and safe) New Year! Thanks again for your support of our programs. Recent downy mildew risk events

 It seems that several rain events have happened over the course of the past two weeks or so. Here is a summary of recent downy mildew risk events, based on the NEWA stations and DMCast. Bristol, VA Fifteen days with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. The latest event happened last Sunday. Floyd, VA Eleven days with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. The last event happened last Friday. Charles City, VA Twelve days with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. The latest event happened yesterday. Central VA Since there was a wide variation among stations, I am listing several around Central VA. Tyro, VA Nine days with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. The latest event happened yesterday. Red Hill and Crozet, VA Only one day with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. Olympic Lake Thirteen days with potential DM infection event(s) since Sept 1. The latest event happened last Sunday. Washington, VA Eight days with potential DM infection event

A quick reminder for late-season disease management materials in preparation for Ida.

Recent downy mildew risks Many of us have been experiencing more rains lately than the past several months, here are a number of days with downy mildew risk events in the past two weeks based on the NEWA’s DMCast. Many of these rains have been sporadic in terms of area and time it covered, so, use these numbers as a guide. Bristol: 14 days (latest was on 8/30) Floyd: 9 days (latest was on 8/29) Charles City: 14 days (latest was on 8/30) Tyro: 7 days (latest was on 8/30) Red Hill: 5 days (latest was on 8/29) Washington: 8 days (latest was on 8/29) Winchester: 9 days(latest was on 8/29) It is probably a good idea to protect your vines against downy mildew in a
