Virginia Vineyards Association’s winter technical meeting:
Reminder: Make plans to attend the 2020 Virginia Vineyards Association winter technical meeting, 19 – 21 February 2020. The meeting will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Charlottesville. A notable change from past meetings is the day earlier start of the meeting, with a conclusion on Friday afternoon rather than Saturday. What: Vineyard Pruning Workshop
When: 27 February 2019

Team taught workshop will have indoor sessions to talk about the fundamentals of pruning grapevines, followed by guided practice in the field. We will prune mature vinifera on VSP with cordon training and head training. We have some hybrids trained to a high-wire to prune as well.
This workshop has an outdoor component; please bring pruners, gloves, safety glasses and be prepared to be outside.

e) 14 March Pruning Competition
Abingdon Vineyards is hosting a Mid-Atlantic Pruning Workshop and Competition beginning at 1 pm on March 14, 2020.
Our workshop and competition is open to all amateur and professional vine pruners. The day will begin with a short pruning workshop and demonstration followed by the competition, celebration and awards ceremony. The top six contestants in the first round will advance to the “Prune Off” round. The highest score of this round will win the title of Grand Champion. Although it is a competition our goal is to create a fun educational event for all levels of experience to enjoy.
The Competition
The Pruning Competition will start with a welcome from the judges and a review of sample spur pruned vines with good/bad cuts set up in the vineyard. After a short question and clarification session, the competition will begin. Contestants will then cut eight vines for time; that time will be converted into points. The judges will then review each vine- awarding additional points for correct cuts or spur positioning and subtracting points for errors. Prizes are yet to be determined. Guidelines are attached following the Felco East and West Pruning criteria.
