Topsin-M application for wound protection

A few people asked in about Topsin-M application for pruning wound protection against Bot canker, so, here is my old post about it.  You can also download a special label for the dormant application from the link.  (Please make sure to have it when you decided to apply Topsin-M.  As you know it is a legal requirement.)

    This comment has nothing to do with Topsin-M, however; I was curious if VA growers should be concerned at this point about Red Blotch associated Virus (RBaV). I was purchasing vines from California and there is now a Disclosure Statement you need to sign stating that plant materials may be infected. This seems to be a common request for Novavines, Sunridge, and Vintage before purchase. Has this been seen in VA?

    Red Blotch associated Virus has been confirmed in a few vineyards in VA. It has been discussed quite a bit due to media hype. Do we have to be concerned? Yes and no. We need a little more research, but my feeling is that the virus has been in VA for a while, but now it got attention probably because we have cleaner vines thanks to efforts of the FPS. In addition, like many other virus diseases, the symptom expression is not consistent. The fruits of infected vines can may suffer lower Brix and higher TA, but as with the cases with grapevine leafroll associated viruses, the actual damage may or may not happen with your vines. It is on my lab's "watch list", but it is not the only one. (It will be a long comment, so, I will come up with a posting in a near future.)

Disease risks from yesterday's rain

Winchester area received precipitations from thunderstorms yesterday.  It started around 3:30PM and lasted until 7:00PM.  The actual amount of precipitation was not high (0.05 in) compared with other northern VA regions where a severe thunderstorm warning was issued, but since the ending part of the thunderstorm hit during the evening, the relative humidity was high (>90%) until 2 AM or so.  Thus, it accounted for 11.5 hours of wetness with the average temperature of 73F.  It was warm and long enough for Phomopsis, black rot, and downy mildew. We are still having chances of rain (40-60%) until Monday.

 It seems that several rain events have happened over the course of the past two weeks or so. Here is a summary of recent downy mildew risk events, based on the NEWA stations and DMCast. I hope you and your family have a good holiday season and a Happy (and safe) New Year! Thanks again for your support of our programs. I will request the IT people to change the setting, but in a meantime, here's the same video. We also appeared in  the Library of Congress project “Winery Workers of Virginia”. One more announcement: I will be moving this blog to a new location ( ext.grapepathology.org ) early next year. I had to make a change due to the email subscription service, which has been terminated.  You do not need to change your bookmark or your email subscription.
